Company History
A.
& F. Pilbeam Ltd. was formed in 1955 and has steadily developed into
a medium sized contractor with experience in all types of construction
from general maintenance through refurbishment and renovation to new
build. Our
company turnover has increased and is currently in excess of £4million.
It is our aim to continue this gradual expansion in a measured
manner by development of our client base together with a gradual
increase of our labour force. Our
principal activities are in East and West Sussex with most work being
within a 35 mile radius of our Head Office in Brighton.
However, in addition to working throughout the two counties we have carried out a number of contracts in Surrey/South London for
Housing Association clients. The Company’s client base comprises Local & County Authorities, Health Authorities, Educational Bodies and Housing Associations, Commercial and industrial Clients. The
Company remains under family ownership and is based upon a strong and
secure financial base.
Our qualified technical and managerial staff, together with our
qualified labour force, have many years of experience within the
construction industry. The
Company has recently been recognised by the Investors in People Quality
(IiP) Standard and has received the IiP Award.
It is our intention to follow the main tenets of this programme
by providing a quality service for our clients whilst continuing to
train and develop both the staff and the company alike. As
a long established local contractor A. & F. Pilbeam has a wealth of
experience of working within Brighton, Hove and Sussex.
We carry out a wide range of work with contract values varying
from nominal amounts up to individual contracts of £2million. Our
operations include our Special Works Division which carries out
contracts valued up to £200,000.00 including routine ‘Day to Day’
maintenance for Housing Associations, Local and County Authorities and
businesses, through to maintenance, refurbishments, extensions,
insurance and new works for our full range of clients. The
Contracts Department at A. & F. Pilbeam carries out a similar
variation of contracts, but larger in nature and to a value of £2million
on anyone project. Contracts
vary widely in their content ranging from refurbishments to new build
and from traditional to more innovative construction methods, often
involving complex service installations. A.
& F. Pilbeam Ltd. has an enviable reputation of working in
educational, health, residential and commercial establishments providing
a quality product for the client whilst causing minimum disruption to
their day-to-day affairs. We
are well used to working in environments where we must be mindful of the
buildings occupants, (whom are often children or the elderly,) and where
we must consider the activities of the client in our programming and
daily activities. We
are fully aware of all safety precautions that must be taken to protect
the client and prevent unnecessary risks to ourselves, the buildings’
occupants and the public, together with the importance of constant
liaison and provision of information to make those affected aware of the
works and programmed events. It
is our intention to work closely with our Clients, working in a
partnership, programming our works accordingly, and not to carry
on with our work regardless of them, or to operate in an adversarial
manner. The
Company has an excellent record of completing projects to programme and
within Clients’ budgets resulting in regular repeat business with both
Clients and construction professionals. Having
acted as Principal Contractor on a large number of projects since
ratification of the Construction Design and Management (CDM)
Regulations, the Company is well aware of its responsibilities under
this and other related legislation.
We are indeed proud of the safety record
that we have attained over the years working on schemes which
just qualify as CDM applicable through to schemes to the value of around
£5million. A
large proportion of our workforce are holders of Construction Skills
Certification Scheme (CSCS) cards.
We are currently working towards a fully qualified workforce by
way of assessment and training of staff, working in association with
local colleges and other training facilities.
Qualification for CSCS certification and NVQ’s requires
successful attendance on an approved health and safety awareness course. All
our sub-contractors are required to provide details of their health and
safety policy statements, insurances and proof that they understand
their responsibilities under the CDM Regulations, including production
of risk assessments and method statements.
It is our Company policy that this information is provided before
any orders are placed. The
Company is a member of the Sussex Building Safety Group Ltd, of which
our Managing Director, Mr. Simon Pilbeam, is a Director.
We subject our sites to regular, unannounced visits by the
Group’s Safety Adviser.
A written report is produced by the Adviser at each visit, one
copy being left on site and a further copy being issued to our head
office in order that any action points can be promptly addressed.
In addition the Group provides advice in respect of new
legislation, assistance in respect of any Health & Safety issues
that the Company may have and liaison with client H & S departments
and the H.S.E. We
do not adopt a policy of profit before safety. |
